Yellowstone National Park

This is what we learned on our family vacation to Yellowstone National Park in our RV.

river and mountain scenery in yellowstone national park

Yellowstone is a beautiful place. We were able to spend two days there during our year long cross country RV trip. We saw some beautiful scenery, wild animals, and interesting attractions.

We definitely want to go back, partly because we enjoyed our time there, but also because we would do things differently next time.

We were there during peak visiting season – end of June. And, even though we made reservations for campgrounds near Yellowstone about six months in advance, we should have booked even earlier.

Taking An RV Through Yellowstone National Park

We ended up having to drive our RV through the park. I was hopeful that it would be OK since I read that the South and West areas of the park are big rig accessible.

Well, it’s true, we could drive through the park in our RV. But, the problem was, there were very few places near attractions that we could park and get out.

Old Faithful

Of all the major attractions in Yellowstone, Old Faithful was the only one we were able to find a big enough parking area that we could actually park the RV and walk to the attraction.

During peak season, there are so many visitors that parking is challenging, even for small cars. So, we missed a whole lot of the park.

I was really glad we did get to see Old Faithful, though. What surprised me about Old Faithful was how many hundreds of people get crammed into the viewing area to see it each time it erupts.

Even though we didn’t get to stop at most of the major attractions, it was still a great experience. Yellowstone is such a huge park, there were lots of places we could pull over on the side of the road and get out and explore.

So, yes, you can drive your RV through the south & west areas of Yellowstone. But, it’s not a good way to experience the park.

I think next time I’ll try making reservations about a year in advance.

Camping At Yellowstone

We were able to spend one night at a nice campground with an excellent location. Grizzly RV is located just outside of the West entrance of the park. It’s in a cute little town with plenty of amenities.

When we go back to Yellowstone, I’ll try to stay there again. But, next time I would like about a week to explore the park. And, we will definitely be leaving the RV at the campsite.
